Overall, this hostel was everything we needed it to be. It was clean, functional, had good facilities (AC, but you have to ask for it to be turned on, and hot water), well located next to the train and metro station and the main bazaar. We arrived very early into Delhi and were accommodated early check in. It was pushed forward by an hour (could have been earlier for an extra 500 rupees) but we appreciated it anyway. We took a tour of Delhi in a car organised by smyle. It was reasonably priced, if slightly expensive (2500 rupees) however the driver pushed for a tip on top, and expressed dissatisfaction at the initial tip we gave him, asking for more, so bear this in mind when calculating costs! The travel desk were helpful, if a little pushy, and gave us lots of options of different tours and experiences. As it was our first time in India, we booked the tour through the hostel in order to be safe. However we did meet many nice tuk tuk drivers who offered to do the same tour for 1000 rupees, which might be better for budget travellers (almost all tuk tuk drivers we had offered this). If you choose a tuk tuk, be sure to have a clear list of places you want to go and be insistent you don’t want to visit any shops or emporiums on the way. Once they get you into a shop, it is very difficult for you to leave without buying anything. The breakfast was very nice, the staff were generally helpful and you can buy chilled bottled water for very cheap (30 rupees for litres). However one thing no one tells you about India is that it is almost always cash only, and cash points only dispense 500 rupee notes (sometimes 100s too if you find a good one). So while a tuk tuk ride might in theory be 10 rupees, they often dont have change so you end up paying 100 or more. We asked staff at the hostel many times to change these notes, and had limited success. The best way we found was to buy a small item from a small shop (there is one next to the hostel) and they often have the change. The hostel was located centrally, close to the station and metro, as mentioned earlier. However it is down a narrow side street which is dirty and has an open urinal at the entrance, which could be a put off for some. General Advice for scams in the main bazaar by the hostel: The main bazaar street is a fun place to explore, however beware of “friendly” locals walking alongside you and asking something like “where are you from”. Be polite and answer, but keep walking and try not to engage in further conversation. They will often invite you to a “government approved” tourism office for a “free map”, this is often a scam for you to sign up for a very expensive tour so do not go in! We found a good way to get rid of them is to say you have already got the map yesterday, or you are leaving tomorrow. They often ask your plans for India, and how you are travelling. If you say by train, they then ask if you have already booked all the trains. Say that you have even if you haven’t!! They will proceed to invite you to a “government approved” tourism office and sell you a rail pass. For booking trains in India we recommend getting an official IRCTC account to book trains online. This takes perseverance to receive an SMS one time passcode - it took ours 3 days to arrive to a UK number so do it before you go! Try not to tell people which hotel you are staying in as they will tell you it is closed, there are riots in the area, it isn’t safe etc. Sometimes they pretend to phone the hostel too in order to make it more convincing. Be polite to these people, but do not believe a word they say! We enjoyed our stay with smyle inn, but having stayed in other hostels for similar prices in Jaipur and jodhpur, we think that the value for money is not as good as we once thought, and Smyle didn’t go above and beyond like some other places did (specifically Vinayak in Jaipur and Gouri Heritage Haveli in Jodhpur).

we had a very nice experience!! the staff was very kindly, and they help us with the sim's phones that wasn't working and other things. A good location, in the center of Paharanj, very close of differents options, and the shower has hot water. We will come back!

We stayed 40 nights here and it was amazing! The location is excellent for the station and the room and wet room were spacious with lots of hot water. Ali on reception was outstanding as were all his staff. He booked 10+ trains for us- many sleepers and long distance and gave us invaluable advice throughout our stay. We would definitely stay here again.

If you're staying in this part of Delhi you're probably an independent traveller who's more interested in location, security and possibly hygiene. Smyle meets these criteria well. This is my second visit there. Staff are friendly and helpful and when our train was cancelled at late notice, Ali was able to book an alternative at a modest booking fee saving us time and hassle. Rooms are basic but secure and clean. Towels are provided and hot water "out of hours is available by request". Ali also arranged Airtel Sim cards in the hotel. You need your passport and visa. If you're here in winter, it's cold so rug up. Especially for the rooftop breakfast.
